1. USA Shipping Paperwork & Customs Processes

Step 1.1 - Find a reliable shipper or freight forwarder

The first step when shipping goods to the USA is to find a reliable shipper or freight forwarder and build a strong working relationship with them. This partner will normally guide the brand through freight options, paperwork, customs submission and delivery coordination.

  • Confirm the forwarder can handle U.S. merchandise imports.

  • Share all shipment details early so the quote and customs process can begin.

  • Keep the forwarder aligned with SoldThrough shipping and delivery requirements.

Step 1.2 - Provide basic shipment information

Before the shipper can provide accurate guidance or pricing, the brand should prepare the key shipment information listed below.

  • Shipment size and weight.

  • Total merchandise quantity.

  • Total shipment value.

  • HTS/HS tariff code used to classify products imported into the United States.

  • Collection and delivery addresses.

  • Sender and receiver contact details.

HTS / HS Code Reminder

The HTS/HS tariff code is used to classify products imported into the United States. The U.S. tariff schedule can be checked at hts.usitc.gov. If the brand is unsure, the freight forwarder or customs broker should confirm the classification before shipment.

Step 1.3 - Confirm the information shippers require

Typical shipment information requested by shippers includes weight, dimensions, total volume, number of pallets or cartons, goods value, HTS code, pickup and delivery locations, and contact details.
